Housing application – international exchange students

All admitted exchange students will receive information via email on how to apply for accommodation through the Housing Office. Please read more about the process and who is eligible.

Eligible students will receive an e-mail with information on how to apply for accommodation. This email is sent during spring at the latest by mid-May for students beginning their exchange studies in August (autumn semester), and during autumn by mid-October for students beginning their exchange studies in January (spring semester). The application period opens around three months before the beginning of the semester. Specific dates are updated on this webpage before every semester (see next section: Rental period and cost).

Should you not receive the information email on the application process before mid-May/October please contact your coordinator/study department at Stockholm University.

After receiving the email with information and instructions on how to apply, should you experience any technical issues with the application, you must contact the Housing Office at housingoffice@su.se. Please read following guide: Accommodation Application Guide

NOTE! For information about your studies, faculty and department at Stockholm University you must contact your international coordinator (contact person/team at Stockholm University).

The criteria which are used to assign the available accommodations to those who apply are based on a University administration´s decision. NOTE! The Housing Office follows the criteria provided by the University administration and is in no way responsible for deciding which students receive an accommodation offer or not.

The time of your housing application (whether you send and complete your application at the opening or just before the application closes) DOES NOT affect your chances to receive an accommodation offer.

NOTE! No applications can be sent after the deadline. Make sure you apply on time!

Accommodation offers

Those who are eligible and who apply within the deadline will be informed via email by the Housing Office on whether they have received an accommodation offer. Due to the numerous steps in the booking process and due to possible last-minute cancellations, it can take up to two months or more before all students can be informed about the status of their application. We strongly recommend that all students also look for accommodations through other services to make sure they have another option should they not receive an offer from us.

When applying for housing every applicant can choose their preferred areas. However, it is not possible to choose a specific room and there is no guarantee that a possible housing offer will match the preferred area. Some other preferences  as for example a room on the ground floor or not located on the ground floor  may be expressed under "additional information" in the application form.

The accommodation offer is received via email and includes the housing contract with all the necessary information about accommodation and rent payments. Read the housing contract carefully before accepting the accommodation offer.

A very short time (usually 23 days) is given to accept the offer (if closer to the arrival days the deadline to accept your offer may even be of one day only!). This is to allow a faster booking process and shorten the waiting time for those who are on the waiting list. Check your emails frequently as you will not receive a second offer!

Student accommodations are rented on a semester basis and charged accordingly. The housing contract dates (arrival and departure dates) are set dates which cannot be changed.

  • Rental period for the autumn semester 2023: August 19, 2023 - January 12, 2024
  • Rental period for the spring semester 2024: January 14, 2024 - June 7, 2024

If your exchange studies continue for one academic year (e.g. from autumn to spring), you can apply for an extension for a second semester – see Extension of rental contract for more information about extension requests.

The rental cost varies from different housing areas and type of accommodation. More information can be found under Housing areas.
