1. Don’t leave your computer unattended.

2. Make sure you keep a backup of all the information on your computer, tablet or smartphone and ensure that you backup your data regularly (at least once a week). Keep your backup in a separate place.

3. Always make sure your computer, tablet or smartphone is running the latest version (including security updates) of:

  • Operating system
  • Web browser
  • Software against malicious code/anti virus
  • Flash
  • Java
  • Additional software

4. Make sure your computer, tablet and smartphone is set to require a password to log in. Make sure you have automatic screen lock activated after 1-5 minutes.

5.  Handle external USB sticks, memory cards and hard drives with caution since they can distribute malicious code. Make sure your external devices have software against malicious code installed.

6. Consider encrypting the hard drives on your devices (computer, tablet, smartphone).

7. Be wary of clicking on links or opening attached files received via email and of unknown web sites as they might spread malicious code.

8. When you are using cloud services – consider the risks associated with this.

9. Be aware of the fact that what you do while your computer is connected to the university network is visible and can be monitored.

10. Don’t download or share copyrighted material such as:

  • Software
  • Movies
  • Music
  • Books etc
