Studying with a disability

If you have a long-term disability, you can apply for disability study support during your studies. The aim is to give you the opportunity to study on equal terms.

The support offered is study-related and should be reasonable in relation to the disability and course requirements. Here you will find information on how to apply for support and the types of adjustments available at Stockholm University.

Disability Services will be present at the fair during Welcome Fair Day on Friday, January 23, from noon to 4 p.m. Please come by to chat with us and ask any questions you might have about studying with a disability at Stockholm University!

Apply for support

Apply for disability study support in the system Nais using the link below. Attach medical documentation verifying that you have a long-term disability to your application. Your attached documents must be in English or Swedish.

You can apply for disability study support if you have a medically documented long-term disability. Having a long-term disability means that you currently have a disability that has existed or is expected to exist for at least 6 months. Long-term disabilities may include:

  • specific reading disorder/dyslexia
  • ADHD, ADD and autism spectrum disorders
  • mental health conditions
  • vision and hearing impairments
  • mobility impairments
  • long-term medical conditions

Temporary injury or illness

Disability study support does not cover temporary injuries, short-term illnesses, or full-time sick leave.

You can submit your application for support when you have applied for a course or programme at Stockholm University. It is also possible to apply for support at any time during the semester.

If you require sign language interpretation or have a visual or mobility impairment, it is recommended that you apply for support at the same time as you apply for a course.

The medical documentation you provide in your application should verify that you currently have a long-term disability that has existed or is expected to exist for at least 6 months. The documentation should be coherent, cohesive and issued by a qualified healthcare practitioner, such as a doctor, psychologist or speech-language pathologist. It must be written in Swedish or English and should include:

  • your name and date of birth (or Swedish personal identity number, if applicable)
  • name and profession of the healthcare practitioner
  • name of healthcare facility
  • date and results of an assessment verifying a long-term disability

It is also helpful if the documentation includes a description of the disability and how it might affect your studies.

If you are an exchange student in need of disability study support, please email disability@su.se as soon as you have applied for exchange studies at Stockholm University.

Please note that you should attach your certificate regarding support from your home university in your application, rather than medical documentation verifying a long-term disability. Your attached certificate must be in English.

After you have submitted your application

After you have submitted your application, it will be reviewed by a coordinator at Disability Services. If your application is complete and does not require a meeting, your certificate will be issued in Nais. If you are in need of support that requires a meeting, you will be contacted by a coordinator before your certificate is issued.

If something is missing from your application, you will be asked to provide additional information or documentation. If you do not meet the criteria for disability support, your application will be denied.

When you have received your certificate, share it with the contact person at your department to learn more about how the support will work in practice. 

Please contact disability@su.se if your needs change during your studies or if you wish to discuss your adjustments again.

Your certificate will state how long it is valid for. If you need to extend your certificate during your studies, please make a new application in Nais.

Where to find us

If you have a physical meeting booked with someone at Disability Services, you will find us in Studenthuset on the Frescati campus.

Our offices are located on the first floor in the Beta section of Studenthuset. From the Infocenter on floor 2, take the stairs or lift one floor down. At this point, you are by the Student Union. Continue down the corridor, past the vending machines and pass through two sets of glass doors. There you will find the waiting room for Disability Services.
