Discover Stockholm and Sweden
Stockholm is a city of contrasts, where nature and modern life coexist. As a student at Stockholm University, you get the best of both worlds: the calm of green surroundings and the vibrant life of a thriving capital.
Our main campus is located inside a Royal National City Park, giving you direct access to nature while being only minutes away from the city centre.
Life as a student in Stockholm
In Stockholm you'll find all the amenities of a modern capital: beautiful architecture, shopping, museums, theatres, music, an international food scene and a lively nightlife. The city is spread across fourteen islands, so you are never far from the water. Just beyond lies the archipelago with more than 30,000 islands, many of which you can visit using your student travel card.
Activities, friendships and networks
Student life at Stockholm University is active and varied. The student union arranges educational, social and cultural activities throughout the year. Museums, cinemas, gyms and many other venues offer student discounts. This creates countless opportunities to build friendships, networks and memorable experiences while living in one of Europe’s most inspiring capitals.
Green and welcoming
Stockholm is recognised worldwide for its commitment to sustainability. In the 2023 Sustainable Cities Index, the city was ranked number one globally for its environmental achievements, including green public space, low emissions and responsible waste management. You are rarely more than 300 metres from a park, which makes nature part of everyday life.
An open society
For a long time, Sweden has been known for social welfare, equality, sustainability and digital innovation. The country is also recognised as one of the most open and progressive countries in the world. In 2025 Sweden ranked fourth globally on the AlTi Global Social Progress Index. This openness is visible in everyday society, from equal opportunities and sustainability efforts to the welcoming atmosphere that many international students experience.
A culture of innovation
Another advantage of studying in Stockholm is that the Swedish capital constitutes a hub for creativity and business. World-famous companies such as IKEA, H&M, Oatly, Volvo and Spotify were founded in Sweden, and the city continues to foster innovation and entrepreneurship. In the 2024 Global Cities Index by Oxford Economics, Stockholm was ranked 14th globally and fourth in Europe, for its strong economy, educated population, low emissions and good governance.
In the creative and entrepreneurial scene, you will find opportunities to connect, intern or collaborate. If you choose to build a career while studying or after graduation, this environment provides a dynamic backdrop to your ambitions.
