For publications not centrally covered by the library, you might be entitled to a discount or a reduced APC.
Find journals where you can publish open access, free of charge
8th of April, the University Library launched a new search tool to find journals that offer open access publishing. As an author, researchers at Stockholm University will quickly be able to find out if they can publish open access in a given journal, without having to pay an article processing charge, APC.
The Library pays for
- Articles in subscription (hybrid) journals and fully open access journals where there is an agreement with the publisher to cover the APCs – please see table below
- Articles in fully open access journals, listed in the DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals)
Please note that eventual additional charges such as color figures or offprints are usually not included in the costs covered by the library.
Conditions
- Corresponding author must be affiliated with Stockholm University.
(The person who handles the manuscript and correspondence during the publication process.) - SU email address. Always use your SU email address (ending with “su.se”) at any stage of the publishing process. This to ensure the identification of SU corresponding authors and eligible articles.

Publications in fully open access journals
A fully open access journal (also called “gold open access journal” or “pure open access journal”) is a journal where all articles are open access immediately on publication. APCs for publications by SU corresponding authors in fully open access journals are covered by the library.
With a number of open access journals, you will not be charged the APC or receive an invoice when your article is accepted for publication. Due to the library’s agreements with specific publishers, invoices for articles with an SU corresponding author will be sent directly to the library.
For all other open access journals, you need to contact openaccess@su.se to arrange for the library to pay the APC. Please note that we cannot reimburse credit card charges or invoices already paid. Always check with us before paying!
Publications in hybrid journals
A hybrid journal is a subscription-based journal where individual articles may be open access with an APC. All other articles are locked behind a paywall.
Centrally funded APCs for hybrid journals are available with specific publishers with which the library has an agreement that includes the open access costs. With some publishers, SU corresponding authors are eligible to a discounted APC, but it is the author or the department that pays the fee.
