Stockholm University (SU) is the seat of broad and internationally renowned environmental science research. A research area crucial for understanding global climate change is constituted by the Baltic Sea. Through a strategic partnership with the University of Helsinki, SU has already involved a considerable number of researchers to explore challenges in this area. Now, the research will be further strengthened by integrating high-tech molecular analyses from SciLifeLab Stockholm, located at Campus Solna. SciLife Lab is a collaboration between Stockholm University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and KI Karolinska Institutet, the home of groundbreaking research and infrastructure in life sciences.

– It's very gratifying that Stockholm University has received this donation. It will enable us to develop research around the Baltic Sea in collaboration with SciLifeLab. There's a great need to develop the environmental science aspect of their activities, an area where Stockholm University has great potential to contribute, especially through research questions concerning the Baltic Sea, says Lena Mäler, Deputy Vice President for Science at Stockholm University.

The funds will be used to recruit specialized researchers and technically skilled staff. Their task will be to drive the research forward by utilizing the latest technology for molecular analyses and bioinformatics.

– We are tasked with being a unifying force for marine researchers and to support the departments, and this will also constitute an expansion of the support, says Tina Elfwing, Director of the Baltic Sea Centre at Stockholm University.
