Stockholm University top 50 in the world in four subjects in the QS ranking by subject
The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 places Stockholm University in the global top 50 in four subjects, and number one in Sweden in seven subjects as well as joint number one in eight. The highest ranked subject is Social Policy and Administration where Stockholm University is ranked 30 in the world.
The QS World University Rankings by Subject is published by Quacquarelli Symonds, QS, a company specialising in information about the higher education sector. The ranking covers a total of 55 subjects, Stockholm University is ranked in 32 of these. Additionally, five broad faculty areas are assessed.
Four subjects ranked within the top 50
Four subjects at Stockholm University are ranked among the top 50 in the world:
- Social Policy and Administration (30, same as 2025)
- Environmental Sciences (35, four places better than 2025)
- Sociology (38, 18 places better than 2025)
- Geography (45, one place better than 2025)
Stockholm University is also ranked 91 in the world in the broad subject area Natural Sciences.
Seven top subjects in Sweden
Stockholm University is ranked first within Sweden in seven subjects: Social Policy & Administration, Sociology, Anthropology, Earth & Marine Sciences, Geophysics, Linguistics and Modern Languages.
Stockholm University also secures the top place in Sweden in Geology (together with Lund University), in Archaeology (together with Lund University and Gothenburg University), in Communication & Media Studies (together with Lund University, Gothenburg University and Uppsala University), in English Language & Literature (together with Uppsala University), in History (together with Lund University and Uppsala University), in Philosophy (together with Uppsala University) and in Education and Training (together with Gothenburg University).
