The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW) invests large amounts in recruiting prominent international researchers with multidisciplinary backgrounds to complement and develop the research environments within several of the foundation's strategic programs. Stockholm University is now allocated SEK 50 million to recruit an internationally leading researchers. The host university itself also contribute SEK 30 million to the research environments that the researcher will lead in Sweden. In total, this makes SEK 80 million in "recruitment package".

The leading international researcher that is recruited is Mason Porter, Professor of Mathematics and Sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He will be active within the Wallenberg Initiative on Networks and Quantum Information (WINQ) at the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (Nordita) and Stockholm University. Mason Porter has among other things done research within quantum physics, electoral sociology, and dynamical systems.
The background to the recruitments is that the Foundation’s strategic programs and research centers were invited to nominate senior researchers considered capable of complementing and developing these research environments. The researchers are required to relocate to Sweden and spend at least 80 percent of their total working time at a Swedish university.
