SU Innovation Day highlights the journey from research to impact
Stockholm University brought together researchers, innovators, students and partners in Aula Magna for Innovation Day 2026, highlighting how academic ideas can evolve into impactful innovations for society.

The event opened with remarks from President Hans Adolfsson, who pointed to key factors behind Sweden’s strong innovation culture:
“We have a very non-hierarchical system in Swedish society and academia. Anyone having an idea they want to pursue is given the chance to also do so. A second explanation is that we are indeed good in cooperation, something we learn already when we are three apples tall.”

Throughout the day, speakers from academia, industry and the innovation ecosystem shared insights on topics such as patents, strategic partnerships, and how research infrastructures and support systems can accelerate the journey from discovery to application. Among the speakers was serial entrepreneur Saeid Esmaeilzadeh. Participants also heard innovation journeys from Stockholm University researchers Tom van der Valk and Marc Friedländer, illustrating how research can develop into real-world applications.
SU Innovation Day is part of Stockholm University’s broader ambition to strengthen its innovation support and create clearer pathways for researchers who want to take their ideas beyond academia.
Hans Adolfsson encouraged researchers to take the next step:
“Fundamental curiosity driven research is something of a trademark for Stockholm University so if you have an idea and want to take it further do not hesitate in getting in connection with the skilled staff of our own Innovation Support system – Innovation Office, SU Ventures and incubators.”
