It is now clear who will receive the European Research Council's Starting Grant in the 2021 call. A total of 397 researchers in Europe will share 619 million euros, which gives a degree of approval of about 10 percent. The researchers each receive around 1.5 million euros to develop their research and building up their research groups.

Stockholm University is awarded the most in Sweden

14 of the researchers have a Swedish host institution. Stockholm University is the Swedish higher education institution that receives the most grants, 4 out of the 14. The researchers at Stockholm University who are granted Starting Grants are:
Birgit Wild, Department of Environmental Science, title "Rhizosphere priming: Quantifying plant impacts on carbon dioxide emissions from a warming Arctic"
Jón Gudmundsson, Department of Physics, title "Transforming cryogenic optics for cosmic microwave background experiments"
Peter Søgaard Jørgensen, Stockholm Resilience Centre, title “Emerging pests and pathogens as a novel lens for unraveling social-ecological cascades”
Ragnhild Lunnan, Department of Astronomy, title "Transients Illuminating the Fates of the Most Massive Stars"

ERC Starting Grant is aimed at researchers at the beginning of their career and has scientific excellence as the only selection criterion. The researchers and their projects have been ranked highest in Europe through peer review and in very high competition. This year, more than 4,000 researchers applied for the grant. The ERC's contribution is part of the European Framework Program for Research and Innovation, Horizon Europe.
