Hans Adolfsson takes up office as President of Stockholm University
Today, February 3, Professor Hans Adolfsson begins his appointment as President of Stockholm University.

“It feels both fun and challenging to return to Stockholm University after my years as President of Umeå University. I am really looking forward to getting to know my Alma Mater again”, says Hans Adolfsson.
Hans Adolfsson is a professor of organometallic chemistry and has been the President of Umeå University since 2016. He began his academic studies at Stockholm University where he studied chemistry during the years 1985–1989. In 1995, he received his PhD at KTH and then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Scripps Research Institute in the USA.
Focus on green chemistry
After his time as a postdoctoral fellow in the USA, Hans Adolfsson was employed as research associate at Stockholm University, then as senior lecturer and in 2007 he was awarded a professorship in organometallic chemistry at the university. His research has focused on the development of new catalytic methods for the production of useful organic compounds, in the field known as green chemistry. During 2010–2013 he was dean of the chemistry section and during 2013–2016 Vice President of Stockholm University.
Hans Adolfsson is currently Chair of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions (SUHF) and Deputy Chair of the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT).
The Board of Stockholm University unanimously agreed to propose to the Swedish Government to appoint Professor Hans Adolfsson as President for the period 1 February 2025 to 31 January 2031. On December the 5th, 2024, the Swedish Government finalized the decision. Hans Adolfsson succeeds Astrid Söderbergh Widding, whose term of office as President expired on the last of January 2025.
