Mattias Klum is a world-renowned photographer, filmmaker, lecturer and artist with a focus on climate, environment and sustainability. He has worked for National Geographic for over two decades and have had about ten cover photos for National Geographic Magazine. Klum has also produced several acclaimed and award-winning documentaries about the world's rainforests, endangered coral reefs and about our own inland sea, the Baltic Sea. Since 2013, he is also an honorary doctor at Stockholm University.

Expert support for climate, environment and sustainability

The University President has now decided to link Mattias Klum as expert support to Magnus Breitholtz, Adviser to the President for Environment and Sustainable Development, to support the University's profiling in issues with a focus on climate, environment and sustainability. If the President wishes, Mattias Klum will also be able to represent the University in an ambassador-like role.

“Stockholm University's research and education in the field of sustainability is in many respects internationally prominent and contributes in various ways to addressing the major societal challenges facing the world. Several of these challenges are acute, and it is absolutely crucial that all parts of society take part in the new knowledge that is constantly being generated. Knowledge can be communicated in different ways, and with Mattias Klum, Stockholm University is offered a unique opportunity to receive support in portraying today's major societal challenges in a way that we in academia traditionally do not. My hope is that through this we can reach out to more and perhaps new groups in society," says Magnus Breitholtz.

Lecturer and inspirer

The role also includes being able to directly support the activities in both research and teaching. For example, it can be as a lecturer or inspirer for students and staff. It can also be about assisting in the development of strategically important educational elements linked to the environment, climate and sustainability.

“I work continuously with experts in different fields and often see how important research and important efforts do not reach out or be implemented in society. Many of the challenges we face require cross-border collaborations to succeed and I look forward to trying to contribute to this in collaboration with Stockholm University," says Mattias Klum.

“It is extremely gratifying that Stockholm University now can, thanks to foundation funding, associate Mattias Klum, long-time honorary doctor at the university, in a more active way in order to be able to bring our sustainability work and the major challenges we face out in new forms. Mattias' strong commitment to the issues will also strengthen us," says University President Astrid Söderbergh Widding.
