Nanna's thesis consists of three self-contained essays in economics:

First essay: The UK Clean Air Act, Black Smoke, and Infant Mortality examines the impact of banning coal on air quality and infant mortality andestimates the effect of smoke pollution on post-war infant mortality.

Second essay: A Fine Solution to Air Pollution? explores the effects of regulation on air pollution in urban areas in England when the monetary punishment if convicted is doubled.

Third and last essay: Environmental Regulation and Firm Performance investigates the effect of environmental regulation in England in the 1960s–70s on changes in employment and the entry and exit of manufacturing plants.

We would like to thank Wolfram Schlenker for a great discussion.

We would also like to express our sincerest congratulations to Nanna on her PhD and wish her all the best in her future endeavours!
