Stockholm University tops list of “unicorn universities” in the Nordics

Stockholm University ranks first in the Nordic region and third in Europe in terms of the number of start-up companies in the tech industry – so-called “unicorns” – that were started by former students.

Unicorn companies are tech companies that are valued to at least one billion dollars. In 2021, 78 such companies were started in Europe, according to a survey by the organization Sifted, which has ranked which European universities have the most founders of the companies among former students.

In the Nordics, Stockholm University is in first place in terms of unicorn companies that have been started by former students, and third place in Europe. Alumni from Stockholm University are behind ten unicorn companies, such as Instabox, Kry and Einride. The KTH Royal Institute of Technology ranks second in Sweden and fifth in Europe with nine unicorn companies.
