The 2022 Sigrid Arrhenius scholarship to Nicklas Österlund, doctoral student at DBB.

The scholarship is awarded for outstanding research work that leads to a doctoral degree. This year, the research fellow will receive SEK 61,000.

Nicklas Österlund has worked to elucidate molecular mechanisms that cause neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AS). An important player in AS is the amyloid-β-peptide, which tends to clump together with similar molecules to form fibrils. The process is toxic to a living brain. Nicklas has worked to study structures and interactions for the intermediate stages of the process, using advanced physicochemical methods, such as fluorescence, mass spectrometry, and NMR.

Nicklas Österlund will defend his dissertation in the spring of 2023 with the dissertation Biophysical studies of Amyloid-β peptide oligomerization.
