Two conferment ceremonies at the end of September
In September, Stockholm University will arrange two conferment ceremonies in the Stockholm City Hall to celebrate newly graduated doctors and new professors. Thursday, September 29, the 2021 Inauguration and conferment ceremony will take place, which was postponed due to the corona pandemic. On Friday 30 September, the 2022 ceremony will take place.
The professorial inauguration and the conferment of doctoral degrees are the foremost among the common academic traditions at universities and higher education institutions in Sweden.
“They are a clear step of a transition from one stage to another in life, something we have all probably experienced at, for example, a school graduation, confirmation or a wedding. The celebration contributes to create commitment and pride for the university”, says Anne Heikkinen Sandberg, master of ceremonies at Stockholm University.
It is a great joy for the President and for the entire university to have the opportunity to now carry out both the ordinary and the postponed ceremony.
During the two ceremonies in the City Hall, those who, during the period 1 July 2020–30 June 2022, defended and obtained their doctoral degree at the university will be conferred. During Thursday, September 29, 122 new doctors will take part in the ceremony and 39 new professors will be installed. On Friday 30 September, 136 new doctors will take part and 26 new professors will be installed. On the same evening, the nine honorary doctorates appointed by the university in 2020 will also be conferred.
During the evenings, jubilee doctors will be conferred, in other words those who received their doctoral degrees at Stockholm University 50 years ago. The University’s gold medals and the Award for Good Teaching will also be awarded.
The inaugural lecture during Thursday’s ceremony will be given by Sara Strandberg, professor of experimental accelerator-based particle physics. On Friday, Lotten Gustafsson Reinius, professor of ethnology, will give the lecture. Entertainment is provided by the Brass Ensemble at the Royal College of Music, the University College of Opera and Stockholm Academic Male Chorus.
