About me

I am a Professor of Physical Paleoceanography, encompassing the fields of physical oceanography and paleoclimatology. My research focuses on the dynamics of large-scale ocean circulation and its interaction with the climate system, both in the present and in the past. My leadership roles include serving as Deputy Head of the Department of Geological Sciences and as a member of the Board of the Bolin Centre for Climate Research, as well as being a leading member of the teams designing the latest DeepMIP-Miocene and DeepMIP-Eocene model intercomparison projects.

Course Director and teacher: The Ocean's Role in the Climate System on Geological Timescales, masters course

Course Director and teacher: Oceanography for Geoscientists, second year course

Teacher: The Sea, evening course

Teacher: Geological Sciences, first year course

Teacher: Paleoclimatology and the Ocean System, second year distance course

My research focuses on the dynamics of large-scale ocean circulation and its interaction with the climate system, both in the present and over geological timescales. Specific topics include the driving forces and state of the deep ocean circulation throughout the Cenozoic (the last 66 million years) and into the future, and its role in climate; the drivers of Arctic Ocean circulation; and the dynamics of oceanic inflows and outflows through the Arctic straits and their impacts on sea ice, global ocean circulation, and climate. I also study the interaction between ocean fronts, winds, topography, and sea ice in the Southern Ocean, both today and during the Quaternary glacial cycles (the last 2.6 million years). These questions are addressed using theory and numerical models of varying complexity, in close collaboration with observationalists and paleoceanographers.
