About me

Identity Formation in Social Media

The purpose of this research is to develop knowledge about how identity is shaped and what characterizes learning on social media. In this research, I focus on which identities are formed on social media, how do identities come to expression on social media and what characterizes social media as learning environments? Several researchers write that social media has become an integral part of our lives. Social media is thus a concept that encompasses a set of services that enable people to interact and communicate with each other. There are various platforms of social media such as online communities, media sharing, network games, blogs, instant messaging, microblogging, forums, email, virtual world and meeting places. Social media consists of a user-generated content that is both created and used by people who participate in these media that enable people to communicate and interact with each other regardless of time and space. According to the latest report from the Internet Foundation in Sweden, iis.se has more than 90 percent of Sweden's population access to the net where you search for information, check on YouTube, use different social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etcetera.
There are also studies that deal with identity issues, but mainly about how people present themselves on social media through personal presentations, blogs or Twitter. In any case, studies on people's identity creation and learning in open and closed groups are still lacking, especially in pedagogy. In pedagogy, researchers are interested in human development and influence processes. Pedagogy answers questions about how and why in society, and what enables people's actions, which makes it important for me as an educator to research people's identity formation on Social media. I have therefore started to study people in, above all, closed groups by being a member of such groups in order to be able to study the social life in these fields as it is. Through a participating online observation; So what is called netnography I try to approach social life as it is in its natural environment. In the netnography method, the online environment is recognized as a field of research where the researcher strives to create an understanding of the peoples' point of view, by interacting and communicating with them, observing them, studying these people's actions in the form of text, images, symbols, music and film.
