Ecosystem modelling

We develop models to facilitate decision-making at national and international level, particularly with regard to eutrophication and its links to climate change and higher nutrient levels.

Centre for Coastal Ecosystem and Climate Change Research (CoastClim)

CoastClim is an interdisciplinary consortium of researchers and advanced research infrastructure that facilitates addresing questions regarding the links between coastal biodiversity and our climate. It brings together expertise in modelling, marine ecology, biogeochemistry and atmospheric research as well as policy analysis and communication from Stockholm University and University of Helsinki.

Baltic Nest Institute

The Baltic Nest Institute (BNI) at Stockholm University provides scientific basis for ecosystem-based management of the Baltic Sea by maintaining and developing data bases and models with a holistic Baltic Sea perspective.

About me

Bo Gustafsson is the director of Baltic Nest Institute in Sweden at Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre. He holds a PhD in physical oceanography from Gothenburg University and has over 20 years experience of scientific research on the Baltic Sea.




Living Coast Project

Levande kust is a full-scale demonstration project with the objective to show that it is possible to restore a eutrophic bay and to find out the costs and lessons that can be learned from such a project.

Resource-Efficient Removal of Nutrients from Wastewater in Cold Climate

Many treatment plants in northern Sweden are facing a major challenge when nitrogen removal requirements are being updated, new goals for climate neutrality and separation of micropollutants are introduced and wastewater volumes are expected to rise as a result of the ongoing industrialization.

TRIACID: Mapping acidification trends in the Baltic Sea

The TRIACID project has mapped acidification trends in different regions of the Baltic Sea during the past 40 years. The project has described spatial variation and trends in pH status, and the main drivers of changing pH have been identified.

OMAI – Operational Marine Acidification Indicator

The Baltic Sea is highly influenced by the catchment areas, whith more complex pH dynamics than in the open ocean. This research project improves the temporal and spatial coverage of acidification monitoring, to broaden the understanding of current acidification trends and to improve the capacity to predict future changes.

HELCOM PLC 8

Pollution Load Compilations (PLC) have been an integral part of The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (HELCOM) assessments since 1987, focusing on annual and periodic assessments of inputs of nutrients and selected hazardous substances. PLC-8 provides assessments of nutrient and contaminant inputs to the Baltic Sea.
