The purpose of my PhD project “A room without a view – windows and the perception of light in medieval and early modern times” is to study views and daylight as an integral part of vernacular architecture. The experience of light and the possibilities to look out from and into buildings naturally affect conditions inside, as well as relationships with people and landscape outside. The choice of design, size, placement and material of windows are what determine these conditions. A study of these decisions in turn enables discussion of contemporary ideas about illumination and transparency, and their wider implications in society.
