Social aspects of multilingualism (SAM)

This research group explores the social dimensions of multilingualism, with the aim of understanding the complexity of multilingualism in society and how multilingualism influences and is shaped by social, cultural, and political contexts. We also investigate second language acquisition from social and multimodal perspectives.

I started as a PhD student in January 2026. I am mostly interested in the social and commercial value of so-called “genuine dialects” in peripheral parts of Sweden and how their language communities have transitioned and changed due to globalization processes. Concepts I use include language commodification, authenticity, and linguistic capital. My PhD project will investigate these concepts, with Gotland as a point of departure, utilizing methods such as linguistic landscape studies and linguistic ethnography.
