About me
Mattias Ekman is an Associate Professor in Media and Communication Studies. His research encompasses two primary fields. The first addresses racism and digital media, aiming to understand how contemporary racist and xenophobic attitudes and discourses are shaped and disseminated in the public sphere. This research also investigates how racism and xenophobia are normalized over time. It is conducted within two projects funded by the Swedish Research Council: "Interactive Racism in Swedish Online Media, Press and Politics: Discourses on Immigration and Refugees at Times of Crisis ", and "Immigration and the Normalization of Racism: Discursive Shifts in Swedish Politics and Media 2010-22”.
The second field focuses on digital political communication, with particular emphasis on how social media has transformed the relationship between politicians, journalists, and citizens. This research is part of the project titled "The hybridization of political communication: Politicized news formats and the boundaries of journal", financed by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond.
