About me


Nicola Nymalm is Lecturer in International Relations of East Asia at the University of Edinburgh/Department of Politics and International Relations.

Previously, she has held positions at the Swedish Defence University and the Swedish Institute of International Affairs. Her research interests include relations between ‘established’ and ‘emerging’ powers drawing from critical approaches to IR, IPE, security, and military studies. She is the author of From ‘Japan Problem’ to ‘China Threat’? (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020), co-editor of The Routledge Handbook of US Foreign Policy in the Indo-Pacific (Routledge, 2023) and her previous work has appeared in journals such as International Political Sociology, International Studies Review, Review of International Studies, Critical Military Studies, and Journal of International Relations and Development


Nicola received her PhD in Political Science/International Relations from Kiel University in Germany. Her dissertation project was funded by the Finnish Cultural Foundation (SKR) in Helsinki. She holds an M.A. in Contemporary history, Chinese studies and European law from the Humboldt University and Free University in Berlin, and a Master of Peace and Security Studies (M.P.S.) from the University of Hamburg.
