Children, Migration and Integration

In 2016, the Human Science Academic Area (HSAA) introduced a specific interdisciplinary initiative directed towards the themes of Children, Migration and Integration (CMI), an initiative to which the Vice-Chancellor had granted funds.

About me

I am Professor in public Law with specific focus on welfare law and child law.

Since October 2025 I am Dean of the Faculty of law.

As a researcher I am connected to the Stockholm Centre for the Rights of the Child, a research centre dealing with child law and children’s rights with a strong focus on interdisciplinary perspectives. The Centre has a book series, the Stockholm Studies in Child Law and Children’s Rights, published by Brill Nijhoff of which I am the General Editor. I am also the editor of Nordisk socialrättslig tidskrift (Nordic Journal of Social Welfare Law).

I teach in public law, family law and child law.  I am - together with collegues - head of an advanced course in child law and children´s rights and a course for PhD-students - Creativitiy, strategy and ethichs in legal scholarship.

My research interests lie within and across the fields of public and family law – more specifically child law and social welfare law. It deals with different aspects of the relation between the state, the family and the individual, including children’s rights often focusing on the responsibility and role of public authorities. In my research, I have often incorporated comparative aspects as well as qualitative interviews and empirical material. As can be seen from my publication list I have written on for example the Swedish ban on corporal punishment, child protection issues, questions related to termination of out-of-home care, children's rights within the health care sector, the right to a fair trial from a child’s perspective, the role and function of courts in child protection cases, non-discrimination and equal treatment of children in the social welfare sector, children’s right to participation through legal representatives. I have also focused on the UN Child Convention and its role and status in Swedish law.

I have been a visiting scholar at Monash University, Melbourne Australia (2012-2013) and in 2016 was a visiting fellow at Oxford University, Institute for European and Comparative Law and as an Associate Member of Exeter College.

Municipal child welfare - investigations, services and trajectories beyond

Two thousand children and youth in eight municipalities will be subject to a prospective, longitudinal study of their trajectory through the child welfare system for six years. The study is conducted by an interdisciplinary research team with academic competence in social work, sociology, law and criminology, collaborating with FoU-Nordväst.
