Research Project
The aim of the project is to investigate the development of nominal compounding in acquisition of Swedish as a second language. Compounding, highly productive in Swedish, poses considerable challenges for L2 acquirers of Swedish. One of the main intentions of the research is to examine

(a) the stages in which the development of noun-noun (N-N) compounds proceeds,
(b) the correlation and interplay between the possible means of expressing the same semantic meaning at the different stages as well as the reasons underlying the choice of the means, e.g. prepositional nominal constructions or genitive noun phrases instead of N-N compounds,
(c) to compare the acquisition by acquirers with a highly synthetical L1, e.g. Russian, to that by native speakers of a language typologically closer to Swedish,
(d) to compare the development of nominal compounding in the L1 and L2 and
(e) to determine the role of transfer in L2 acquisition of morphology.
