Danish East India Company plans to open trade with China and Japan, 1630–1680. Mathias Istrup Karlsmose, CEMAS PhD candidate, presents at the Naval Museum in Karlskrona.
During the 17th century, trade with East Asia remained out of the hands of the Danish East India Company. But from 1620-1700, Danish merchants often dreamed big of the rich markets of China and Japan.
This seminar will detail the Danish perception of China and Japan in the 17th century, and cover the plans to travel there, as they were amde in Copenhagen and Tranquebar, leading up to the first ship, the FORTUNA, that actually reached the shores of China in 1676. These unique voyages will be used to shed light on how the Danes saw China and Japan and how China and Japan saw Denmark.
Mathias Istrup Karlsmose is a CEMAS PhD candidate at the Department of History, Stockholm University.
