Annelies Kusters, Professor in Sign Language and Intercultural Research, Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies, Heriot-Watt University, presents at the seminar.

The presentation will illuminate the process of 'calibration,' which is the strategic employment of the semiotic repertoire—encompassing modalities such as signs, objects, and writing—to facilitate mutual understanding. “Calibration” will be illustrated with a range of brief videos of everyday interactions involving deaf signers.

Annelies Kusters is a Professor in Sign Language and Intercultural Research at the  Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies at Heriot-Watt University. Her research interests lies within ethnography, anthropology, deaf geographies, Deaf Studies, multilingualism, language strategies, language ideologies.
