MMK PhD Erik Svensson Grape wins prize for his doctoral thesis

Congratulations to Erik Svensson Grape who won the 2022 “Högskoleföreningens pris” in natural sciences for outstanding scientific achievement for his doctoral thesis!

Erik, wrote his thesis ”Crystalline Porous Materials Inspired by Metallodrugs” under the supervision of Andrew Kentaro Inge, who says “Erik has been a highly motivated and curious student, and is an incredibly kind and helpful person. It has really been a delight to follow his progress during his PhD. I’m very happy for him and grateful to Högskoleföreningen for recognizing his achievements”.

The new doctor is now planning for his post doc in University of Oregon, US, which is planned to start in the summer of 2023 with funding from the Swedish Research Council (VR). Erik also studied both his bachelor and master at Stockholm University.

The thesis won with the following motivation: “The thesis dealt with solid drugs, determination of their structures and how this can be generalized when it comes to new drugs and materials with completely different applications. Six of the dissertation's articles were published in highly reputable journals. Erik was the sole first author of all articles in the thesis and defended his dissertation within the allotted time. Erik determined the structure of bismuth subsalicylate, which is a textbook example of a metal-based drug but is often misrepresented. These should be updated now after Erik’s structure determination. Erik’s ideas and results have driven international research on several fronts.”

Once again, congratulations Erik! We are proud of you and wish you all the best for your future!
