New research about Swedish 18th Century Theatre and Opera
Performing the Eighteenth Century: Theatrical Discourses, Practices, and Artefacts is a new anthology in the Department of Culture and Aesthetics book series Stockholm Studies in Culture and Aesthetics, at Stockholm University Press.
What can artists learn from theatre scholars when it comes to performing historical works on stage today? What can theatre scholars learn from today’s artists when it comes to understanding the works and practices of the past? How is the experience of modern spectators affected by attending performances in historic theatres? And how, aesthetically, do we experience the reconstruction of productions from the remote past?
The essays in Performing the Eighteenth Century: Theatrical Discourses, Practices, and Artefacts try to answer these questions by initiating a dialogue between academic and artistic research. They reflect a desire to develop and expand the methods traditionally used by theatre scholars presenting a variety of angles on today’s performances in historic theatres and on today’s attempts to revive theatrical practices of the past.
The articles are based on results from the research project ”Performing Premodernity” where an international group of researchers studied the Drottningholm Theatre at the Drottningholm castle from 1766.
Edited by Meike Wagner and Magnus Tessing Schneider
Editors are Meike Wagner, Professor of Theatre Studies, and Magnus Tessing Schneider, Associate Professor of Theatre Studies, both former coworkers at the Department of Culture and Aesthetics.
Other contributors to the book from the department are Willmar Sauter, Professor Emeritus, och Petra Dotlačilová, Postdoc, as well as Maria Gullstam and Mark Tatlow, both former researchers at the department.
