Webinar: Open Access in Practice

How, when and why should you publish your research openly? What ethical aspects should one be aware of? And what costs are covered by the library when it comes to OA publishing?

During the 2022 Open Access Week, the webinar "Open Access in Practice", aimed at researchers and PhD students at Stockholm University, was held on 26 October. It is now available to watch in retrospect here on the web.

The webinar consists of four 15-minute presentations on open publishing, open research data, ethical considerations and how researchers can take part in the publication agreements at Stockholm University Library.

The presenters in the webinar work at various research support functions at Stockholm University, such as the Research Data Management Team, Publishing Support, License Coordination Team and Ethics Support Function.

Language English.

During the webinar, a couple of questions were asked, which are answered here.

1. A question on data publishing (2nd session of the webinar)

– For a study, based on a series of semi-structured interviews, what do we consider to be the data? Full interview transcripts and the interview guide? Is it a good practice to publish interview transcripts (once privacy permits it, of course)? Thank you.

Maria Almbro from the Research Data Management team answers:

– Very good question! What constitutes a dataset is often best decided by the investigator. It should be reproducible of course but also fully informative so that reuse is possible. In this case, what could be published would also depend on whether the interviews contain personal or sensitive personal information. If there is any risk that data cannot be fully anonymized, it may be necessary to restrict access to the data.

2.  A question about the library's publishing agreements (4th session of the webinar)

– Why is the corresponding author that has to be affiliated with Stockholm university and not the first author?

Frida Leijon Lundqvist, License Coordinator at Stockholm University Library, answers:

– The reason is that the corresponding author is the one that corresponds with the publisher. So the publisher has the address and the contact with the corresponding author, thus it's the corresponding author that is mapping to the university's agreements. So that's the reason why it's the corresponding author.
