Research group SOCAME – Social and Critical Aspects in Mathematics Education

SOCAME advances research on mathematics education as social, cultural and political phenomena. At present, the group is a strong research environment with regular seminars and several connected international projects and initiatives.

Members in SOCAME engage in understanding mathematics education as contextualised social and cultural practices. Therefore, we adopt theoretical and methodological positions that allow us to broaden the analysis of mathematics teaching and learning to understand their significance for contemporary societies.

We are interested in research questions regarding in(ex)clusion of students and teachers with respect to markers as ability, multiligualism, gender, ethnicity, etc. We also engage with philosophical questions of how mathematics forms as a field of knowledge, and how this field connects to the teaching and learning in institutionalised educational environments.

SOCAME is network with participants from different Swedish universities, from the Nordic countries, and internationally. We are committed to our work to be characterized by its thoroughness, but also creativity and respect. Therefore, we keep a friendly and supportive atmosphere in the group.

In mid-September, the IMMPACT project sent out a survey to all first-year students in mathematics and physics in Sweden. The researchers want to find out who is applying, why they applied, and whether they feel welcome in the programme.
