Research project SIGN-EFL: Supporting Inclusive Guidance for Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students

This project seeks to explore English as a foreign language (EFL) education for deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students across Europe.

The project has the following objectives:

  • To understand the current status of teaching English as a foreign language to deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students across participating countries.
  • To create a transnational collaborative network of EFL teachers in Deaf education. This network will share and scale teaching strategies that contribute to successful EFL education for DHH students.

Researchers and teachers from Czech Republic, France, Germany, Spain, and Sweden
(1) conduct a comprehensive analysis of EFL teaching for DHH students through national expert consultations and document review across participating countries; (2) observe EFL classrooms with DHH students to collect teaching practices and strategies; (3) organize transnational focus groups to facilitate discussions about challenges and teaching practices, gathering valuable insights and representations.
