Research project Assimilating and producing text via assistive technology
Many pupils with intellectual disabilities have challenges with reading and writing. An alternative to traditional reading and writing is to use assistive technology to assimilate and produce text. However, there is a lack of research on whether assistive technology can support pupils with intellectual disabilities in assimilating and producing text. Therefore, the project aims to investigate whether a systematic and intensive use of assistive technology can support the ability to assimilate and produce text among pupils in compulsory schools for pupils with learning disabilities.
The project has a single-subject design, and the pupils participate in an intervention using text-to-speech and speech-to-text programs. Each pupil’s development and progression are studied. The results will show whether a systematic and intensive use of assistive technology can support pupils with intellectual disabilities in assimilating and producing texts. If assistive technology is supportive at school, it might also be used in free time and society among children and youths with intellectual disabilities. Assistive technology can promote their participation.
