The photo on the right shows an image from the satellite Sentinel-2, from the NW Baltic Sea from the 13 August 2015 (processed by Dmytro Kyryliuk), covering several coastal bays as well as the open NW Baltic proper. In the open Baltic proper you can see surface accumulations of cyanobacteria typical for the summer months during calm conditions and indicating surface currents.

The images also show coastal influence. For example, the southern part of Bråviken (bay in the central west part of the image) is very shallow and influenced by resuspension of sediment, and here you see the very bright reflection from the suspended sediment. The northern part is much deeper and has clearer water. Information provided by Dr Susanne Kratzer (PI, lead scientist of the remote sensing group). Photo: © European Space Agency.
