Collaborating on the Edge of Failure

Julia Grimm, Assistant Professor of Management, Organisation and Society at Stockholm Business School and Juliane Reinecke, Professor of Management Studies at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford has published the article "Collaborating on the Edge of Failure: Frame Alignment Across Multiple Interaction Arenas in Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships" in the Academy of Management Journal, one of the most prestigious and highly ranked journals in organization and management studies. Drawing on qualitative research methods, Julia Grimm studies multi-stakeholder partnerships, transnational governance, and social movements, all in the context of global supply chains and social and environmental sustainability issues. Julia’s research takes a process perspective and is grounded in framing and paradox theory.

New articles on geopolitics, world economy and international business

Three new scientific articles present current research on geopolitics, the world economy, and international business.The articles are written by Professor Tony Fang together with co-authors. Tony Fang works in the Management section. The article " The Tech Cold War, the multipolarization of the world economy, and IB research " discusses one of the hottest topics of our time: the increasing rivalry between the USA and China and its impact on the world economy and research in international business. The article is written by Professor Tony Fang along with Professor Rosalie Tung from Simon Fraser University, and Professor Ivo Zander from Uppsala University, and is published in the International Business Review in December 2023. Read the article "The Tech Cold War, the multipolarization of the world economy, and IB research" Sanctions, counter-sanctions, and secondary sanctions against states, organizations, companies, and individuals are increasingly being used as a tool to achieve geopolitical goals. The article " International business under sanctions " provides a framework for defining and capturing this non-market phenomenon in the business world. The article is published in the Journal of World Business (JWB, April 2023) and is written by Professor Tony Fang, Professor Klaus Meyer from Western University, Professor Andrei Panibratov from EMLV Business School Paris, Professor Mike Peng from The University of Texas at Dallas, and Professor Ajai Gaur from Rutgers University. Funding to research about leadership in digitalized work environments

Nick Butler has received research funding of SEK 4,668,000 from the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) for the research project "Leading by Algorithm: Reconfiguring the Nature of Leadership in Digitalized Work Environments". The project examines the development and application of digital leadership tools in high-performance organizations. The aim is to gain insights into how data-driven analytics are transforming the nature and scope of leadership in digitalized work environments. The project addresses two main questions: How is the task of leadership transformed by algorithms, and how do data-driven analytics affect the leader-follower relationship? Together with Dr Sverre Spoelstra at Copenhagen Business School and Dr Emilie Hesselbo at Lund University, Nick Butler is conducting qualitative research in the Swedish tech sector. The project runs from January 2024 until December 2026. Nick Bulter is an Associate Professor at the Management section at Stockholm Business School since 2016. He previously worked at Lund University as a postdoctoral researcher and St Andrews University, Scotland as a lecturer. Prior to this, he trained at the universities of Warwick, Sussex, and Leicester in the UK.

Organization Culture in Hospice

In the thesis "The Ecstasy of Tragedy - An Ethnography of Hospice," Oscar Wandery explores the organizational culture within palliative care at a hospice. It focuses on end-of-life care and what it is like to work in palliative care at a hospice. In Sweden, hospice care is quite well-known, and approximately 11% of individuals receive palliative care in hospices and hospitals. - I first encountered palliative care many years ago when a family member passed away. This led me to become aware of how death is organized in our society. It is often said that death is hidden away, and to some extent, that is true. But death is also more formally organized in our contemporary society compared to how it was in the past. I find this aspect interesting and a reflection of our times, says Oscar.

Research Grants to Stockholm Business School

The Jan Wallander and Tom Hedelius Foundation, along with the Tore Browaldh Foundation, have decided to award the following research grants to Stockholm Business School. Leading by algorithm: Reconfiguring the nature of leadership in digitalized work environments, 1 500 tkr, Nick Butler, Management section The project examines the development and application of digital leadership tools in high-performance organizations. Our aim is to gain insights into how data-driven analytics are transforming the nature and scope of leadership in digitalized work environments. The project addresses two main questions: 1) How is the task of leadership transformed by algorithms? 2) How do data-driven analytics affect the leader-follower relationship? The project explores the opportunities and challenges faced by organizations in which soft leadership skills are blended with automated inputs. The data collection process is based on a qualitative methodology, drawing on semi-structured interviews with product developers and senior managers as well as observations of key strategic meetings in participating organizations. Corporate information, trading, and equity market liquidity, 1 500 tkr, Lars Nordén, Finance section According to the efficient markets’ hypothesis, equity market prices reflect all relevant information. Firms disclose corporate information through, e.g., quarterly announcements and other news releases. When the news becomes public, it is incorporated into stock prices either by market makers updating their outstanding quotes, or by investors trading on the information. Private information must be traded on to be incorporated into prices. Uninformed investors, like retail traders, rely on efficient markets to get fair prices when they trade. When market makers face the risk of trading with informed investors, they provide less liquidity. We investigate how firms’ information and informed investors’ trading affect equity market liquidity, and how to properly measure these effects. Exploring the new finance: Meme stocks, melt-ups, and going green, 1 800 tkr, Håkan Jankensgård, Finance section In this project, we will investigate how retail investors behave and perform in response to several new and puzzling phenomena that have appeared in the financial markets in recent years. Following the financial crisis in the late 2000s, the world experienced a prolonged period of relative stability that turned out to profoundly alter the way the markets viewed risk and return. During the Covid-19 pandemic, retail investing experienced a renaissance as people with too much time and money on their hands took to stock market investing, and social media became a force to be reckoned with. Partly as a consequence of this, the financial vocabulary has had to be extended to include, for example, so-called “meme-stocks” and “melt-ups”, which is to say a highly local and social media-driven boom. Around the same time, an increasing demand for “green assets” started to affect how capital is allocated and, by extension, how assets are priced. Our research will probe into how retail investors help generate these phenomena and how they ultimately perform in them. More knowledge about these matters is desirable because this investor category is often made out to be less sophisticated and in need of the regulators’ protecting hand, although, intriguingly, anecdotal evidence suggest that their usage of social media has occasionally given them the upper hand. In pursuing this knowledge, we will benefit from access to unique high-frequency ownership lists that allow us to learn about financial markets from a new angle compared to the traditionally used order books. The Jan Wallander and Tom Hedelius Foundation, as well as the Tore Browaldh Foundation, aim to support social science research primarily in the fields of business administration, economics, and economic history. Political dimensions of social entrepreneurship

A new thesis shows the political dimension of social entrepreneurship. Amelia Olsson defended her thesis Political Dimensions of Entrepreneurship - Exploring Competing Discourses in a Marginalized Urban Community Aspiring for Social Change on March 7 at the Management section, Stockholm Business School. The study explores the political dimension of entrepreneurship emerging within the context of a subaltern counterpublic (a form of community cultivating contestation of current social structures) primarily consisting of second-generation Swedes with connections to marginalized suburbs in Stockholm. It examines discursive struggles within a network of entrepreneurs that are part of the community, who organize in various ways against social exclusion and marginalization to improve conditions for marginalized people and construct a more inclusive and democratic society. - I have been interested in politics, activism and big societal debates for a long time, and before I started my PhD I noticed that some entrepreneurs combined their activism with entrepreneurship. I found this phenomenon interesting and saw examples of it in the anti-racist movement in Sweden. This became the starting point of my study, says Amelia.

Stockholm Business School to win a grant for Transforming Entrepreneurship

There is a need to rethink and re-enact Entrepreneurship Education (EE). This is the firm conviction of a group of European scholars who together have received an Erasmus+ Cooperation Partnership grant. The main aim of the Transforming Entrepreneurship Education (acronym: TrEE) project is to change EE’s direction and practice in Europe. The team will start the TrEE project on December 1st 2022. In its essence, the TrEE project is about creating the resilience that is needed to deal with the major crises of our times, and the growing complexities of the societal challenges that come with them, both ecologically as well as socially. Entrepreneurship has the potential to contribute to solving as well as worsening some of such contemporary societal challenges. In this project, we propose to decouple EE from the creation of (high-growth) businesses, and instead put its (creative) potential to work to help enact more just futures, for ‘people’ as well as ‘planet’. This entails shifting towards innovating without exhausting planetary resources, addressing social inequalities, and becoming more inclusive. In short, this entails a justice for all life; human and more-than-human. This means making changes in the way we currently enact EE, finding new pedagogical premises, and developing new course formats, materials, and assignments. Concretely the project aims at elaborating new pedagogical approaches; developing & validating relevant course designs, materials, and teaching interventions and at organizing training activities (educate-the-educator). The project will run until the end of 2024.

Social scientists are paying increasing attention to the business and financial elites: There’s a great need to understand who these elites are, what they do, and what makes them tick, as individuals but also as a class. By examining elite business schools, the institutions that train and prepare people to assume important leadership and decision-making positions in business, finance and related sectors, we may also learn how the economic elites are made.
