At the individual level, migration often happens in connection with family formation and the process of getting established as an adult. It can take place across a national border, or within a smaller area. Demographers within this research area are interested in the factors that help shape migration decisions, and also in the life-course processes that evolve in the wake of a migration. The latter can be seen as reflections of the integration of immigrants in a new area, including with influences on the societies in which migrants live. Many of our researchers are involved in projects on migrant life trajectories and the geographical segregation that may be produced by changing migration patterns. Several projects are carried out in collaboration with colleagues in human geography.

Migration is a key factor in contributing to population change, with different impacts on population structures in situations with more outmigrants than in-migrants and when the opposite holds.
