The Center for Social Research on Alcohol and Drugs (SoRAD) has for more than twenty years developed a strong competence in the ANDTS research area, which today permeates many of the research activities at the Department of Public Health Sciences.
The research is about policy issues and how society seeks to regulate people's drinking, drug use, gambling and smoking, as well as the consequences thereof. Furthermore, the significance of different cultures and social contexts is studied, e.g. young people's drinking. A critical perspective is often applied to how these phenomena are defined and debated by different actors.
The organization, marketization and outcomes of treatment systems are other important research areas. Finally, social epidemiological research on consumption patterns and trends, the importance of social conditions for consumption and problems, across the life course as well as across social groups, are of great significance in the ANDTG research area.
