The project, with Joseph Samec as Project manager, will examine possibilities to develop sustainable aviation fuel out of lignin, one of the main chemical components of plants and wood.

The goal is to create an assessment for what sources of lignin that are most suitable for the purpose. The team will evaluate kraft lignin, a side-stream from the pulp industry and lignin derived from fractionation of saw dust, fibres, bark, roots and branches.

The project, that has received funding for three years, will evaluate technical feasibility; energy balances; greenhouse gas emission calculations; and estimation of cost for production of aviation fuel from the biomass sources.
