Ylva Sjöberg is a doctoral student focusing on polar research in the Department of Physical Geography and Quaternary Geology, Stockholm University. She is also involved in the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), an international organization for young polar scientists.

Recently, Ylva received an unusual request from Sweden's Arctic Ambassador Gustaf Lind: could she represent Sweden at a ceremony at the North Pole when the Olympic torch passes on the way to the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia in February? The purpose of the ceremony is to highlight the spirit of cooperation between the Arctic countries , all of which will be represented at the ceremony.

Ylva Sjöberg accepted the offer and on 15 October, Ylva and other representatives left Murmansk on a Russian icebreaker and, a few days, reached the North Pole, where they participated in a ceremony to mark the passing of the Olympic fire. The delegation will return on 28 October.
