General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO)
General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO)

The map is based on a digital bathymetry database compiled by measurements from ships and satellites. GEBCO serves as the foundation for the digital bathymetry models used in, for example, Google Earth and National Geographic Maps.

Professor Martin Jakobsson and his colleagues at the department have been involved in the mapping of the world’s ocean floor for a long time. This work has mainly been carried out in the context of GEBCO, where Martin Jakobsson also became Vice Chair this year. In the new version of the map, Martin Jakobsson has done most of the cartography, in his roll as chief editor.
