The course is intended to provide an in-depth overview of sociolinguistics theories and sociolinguistics research. It will cover in detail topics such as languages and language varieties that different speakers use in different situations, regional and social dialectology, language variation and change, language choice and code-switching, language and gender, language contact (language maintenance and loss, pidgins and creoles, new Englishes), and language and power. The focus will be primarily on English but other languages will be considered, depending on the topic.
