Film Experience: theories and approaches

Course on Advanced level in Cinema Studies. This course explores film experience from a chosen theoretical perspective (e.g. phenomenological, cultural studies, new materialist, cognitive).

Welcome activities

Stockholm University organises a series of welcome activities that stretch over a few weeks at the beginning of each semester. The programme is voluntary (attendance is optional) and includes Arrival Service at the airport and an Orientation Day, see more details about these events below.
Your department may also organise activities for welcoming international students. More information will be provided by your specific department.

It offers enhanced insights into film theoretical traditions and schools, emphasizing the methodological question of applying the chosen approach to a particular genre, period, style or a thematic area. The course draws from topical or on-going research projects, and its special focus varies from term to term.

On completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate: - an enhanced knowledge of a chosen film theoretical question - an advanced familiarity with a film theoretical tradition and its methodological consequences - an ability to critically formulate and evaluate research problems within this particular domain of cinema studies.

  • Course structure

    The course run half pace daytime for 10 weeks. 


    Teaching format

    The teaching consists of lectures and seminars as well as screenings of films and other media material.


    The course is examined through an individual home exam and two individual written assignments.

  • Schedule

    The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.

    Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
