Introduction to geomicrobiology

The course combines current knowledge of geological processes and microbial mechanisms as they determine(d) Earth evolution. The course includes a review of biological processes that are important in biogeochemistry of element cycling and in microbe-mineral interactions, as well as the major geomicrobiological processes shaping the Earth through geological time (e.g., microbialite formation, hydrothermal vent functioning, travertine precipitation, evolution of the atmosphere).

    Assessment

    Is based on a written/oral assessment at the end of the course. Assessment criteria are:

    A = Excellent
    B = Very good
    C = Good
    D = Satisfactory
    E = Sufficient
    Fx = Insufficient
    F = Entirely insufficient

    The assessment criteria will be outlined at the start of the course. To pass the course, a minimum grade E is necessary.

  • Schedule

    This is a preliminary schedule and is subject to continuous change. For this reason, we do not recommend print-outs. At the start of the course, your institution will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.
  • Course literature

    Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
