Bachelor Programme in Latin American Studies

The Bachelor Programme in Latin American Studies with specialization in Portuguese/Spanish includes six semesters of study (180 credits). It provides knowledge about the history, politics, economics and social and cultural development in Latin America, and good basic knowledge in and about Portuguese/Spanish.

The Bachelor Programme in Latin American Studies with specialization in Portuguese/Spanish includes six semesters of study (180 credits). This Bachelor's program has a multidisciplinary and international profile. It provides knowledge about the history, politics, economics and social and cultural development in Latin America, the Caribbean and the Hispanic USA. Graduates of the program will be well-equipped for careers in areas such as international organizations, business, government, diplomacy, tourism, and media, where there is growing demand for expertise in Latin American studies.

This 180-credit program spans six semesters and offers a deep dive into the region's history, politics, economy, and social and cultural development. Students choose a specialization in either Spanish or Portuguese, which forms a core part of their studies alongside courses in Latin American Studies. Instruction is primarily in English, with language courses conducted in either Spanish or Portuguese, depending on the chosen specialization.

The curriculum is designed to provide students with both theoretical and practical knowledge, integrating social sciences and humanities. Key themes include the evolving political and economic landscape of Latin America, the rise of new movements, and the ongoing struggle for rights and inclusion by previously marginalized groups. The program also includes the possibility of an internship in Latin America, giving students practical experience to complement their academic studies.

  • Programme overview

    Year 1 and 3; Term 1, 2, 5, 6:  Latin American Studies.
    Year 2: Term 3, 4. Portuguese or Spanish.

    Year 1

    Latin American Studies I, 30 credits, LAS100; Latin American Studies II, 30 credits, LAS200

    Year 2

    Year 3

    Latin American Studies - Bachelor's course, 30 credits (main field: Latin American Studies), LA3300.

    Other courses totaling 30 credits at Stockholm University, or another institution in or outside Sweden, with a focus on Latin America, or alternatively Latin American-focused internship for 30 credits (20 weeks) in Sweden or abroad (main field: Latin American Studies). Selection of other courses is done in consultation with and approved by the Director of Studies for Latin American Studies. Selection of internship placement is done in consultation with and approved by the internship coordinator for Latin American Studies.

    Independent project

    Term 5: The course LA3300 comprises an independent project for the Bachelor's Degree and two modules; one with a focus on cross discipline theory and method, one with a focus on a thematic and regional specialization connected to the independent project. The project is carried out as a limited research project the end result of which is a scientific paper. In the initial stages of the project students acquire a deeper knowledge in the design of a scientific research paper.

You should search for "Bachelor Programme in Latin American Studies" there, make sure to choose the right study period, and choose the language specialization of your preference (Spanish or Portuguese). Regarding the study period, take into consideration that you can start the BA program only in the autumn semester. Therefore, the application period is during the previous spring semester.
