Master's Programme in AI and Language
AI is rapidly transforming our world, reshaping industries, and redefining how we live, work, and communicate. Join us in driving industrial and societal progress by creating the next generation of AI systems that master human language!
With this master’s programme, you will become an expert in developing and using AI to handle linguistic data, both in the form of text and speech, while also becoming aware of the limitations, risks and ethical problems of this technology. The programme covers a broad, interdisciplinary field that involves modelling human linguistic behaviour using digital methods. The application of AI to linguistic data has a wide variety of practical uses, ranging from conversational chatbots and machine translation to untapping the ever increasing amounts of data stored in the form of natural-language text or speech.
The programme is designed for students with a background in linguistics, computer science or cognitive science. You will have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of theories, technologies, and methods for analysing, processing, understanding, and generating human language. The programme includes foundational courses in linguistics, programming, and statistics, and it delves into the development of models and computer systems for natural language processing.
Throughout your academic journey, you will be instructed by faculty who are actively engaged in research within the relevant fields, spanning from general linguistics and phonetics to computer science, language technology, and neuroscience. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to apply for relevant courses offered by our partner institutions, such as the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and Uppsala University.
As a student, you will develop expertise in automatic linguistic analysis, generation, and comprehension. You will also have the chance to delve into various applications within the field, such as multilingual systems, computer-assisted language learning, digital humanities, or speech technology. Furthermore, you will enhance your scientific approach and your ability to independently analyse and communicate your work in written and oral forms. You will also actively engage in discussions about ethical considerations related to AI applications in various contexts.
Completing the Master's program in AI and Language will earn you a Master's degree in Language Informatics, equipping you with a broad skill set for a career both within and outside academia. Upon program completion, you will be eligible to pursue doctoral-level education.
