Chinese III

  • 30 credits

This course includes one semester of studies in modern standard Chinese (Putonghua). The course develops knowledge and skills in oral and written Chinese as students practise their Chinese reading and listening comprehension.

The course also provides an introduction to Early Chinese History. The course requires Swedish.

  • Course structure

    Modules

    Modern Chinese III a, 9 credits (ECTS)
    The module mainly comprises studies of lighter texts in modern standard Chinese. In connection with this, the student learns to write, read and translate about 250 new characters. The course also includes exercises in translating easier texts to and from Chinese. The teaching also includes a theoretical description of Chinese grammar as well as practical exercises.

    Modern Chinese III b, 9 credits (ECTS)
    The module continues Modern Chinese III a with studies of easier texts in modern standard Chinese. The student learns to write, read and translate about 250 new characters.

    Language Proficiency III, 4.5 credits (ECTS)

    This module contains practical exercises aimed at increasing the student's language ability both in writing and orally.

    Early Chinese History, 7.5 credits (ECTS)
    The module provides basic knowledge of China's ancient history and cultural development, from the Shang Dynasty to the fall of the empire. Historiographical methods and traditions are studied, as are the central sources. China's ancient history is explored from a Western as well as Chinese perspective.

    Assessment

    The modules Modern Chinese III A and Modern Chinese III B are examined through 5 written dictations, 5 written assignments and a final written assignment per module.

    The module Proficiency III is examined through 5 written assignments and 2 oral presentations.

    The module
    Early Chinese History is examined through a home exam.

  • Schedule

    The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.
