About the education
The course provides an introduction to the basic concepts and methods of the materials chemistry as well as a broad overview of how chemistry is used to produce advanced materials, such as small molecules in solids, polymers, glasses, ceramics, metals and composites. The course covers the principles of material synthesis and process engineering, for example chemical deposition, precipitation, biomineralization, sol-gel and powder-based processes, as well as selected characterization methods, for example mechanical measurements. The course gives knowledge about how and why different materials combine different properties and how these materials are used technologically. The course also deals with, both generally and from the materials chemistry point of view, the scientific approach, possibilities and limitations of science, research ethics, role of material chemistry in society's sustainable development, and nanosafety. An important part of the course is the research-related project work carried out in a group and presented at a final seminar.
