Translating God
The course provides an overview of various aspects of the translation of religious texts. Special emphasis is put on the Christian Bible, but the course will also offer perspectives on religious scriptures such as the Hebrew Bible (Tanak), and the Qu’ran.
The course will not focus primarily on linguistic problems, but rather highlights different historical, cultural, and socio-political aspects of religious texts in translation. In particular, the reception of these texts in different target cultures/contexts is highlighted, discussing how these contexts have shaped the understanding of the religious texts in question, but also how the texts themselves have contributed to influencing and shaping these contexts and cultures.
