The rights to your inventions

As a university-based researcher in Sweden you have a unique right to the inventions that result from your research. This right if often referred to as “The Teachers Exception” (lärarundantaget) or “The Professors Privilege”. The exception means that it is you, not your employer, that has the commercial rights to your inventions and the results of your research. This applies so long as you have not made a different agreement that contradicts this.

The teacher exception gives you a great possibility to decide what you want to do with the results of your research. But it also gives you the responsibility to find ways to ensure that your research is appropriately utilized, something that is made explicit in the Higher Education Act. One way of utilizing research results, and to get results and knowledge out into society, is through innovation development and commercialization.

Finding the right paths for successful innovations is not always easy. To help you SU has developed a supportive innovation system consisting of three elements; the Innovation Office, Incubator and Holding Company. The Innovation Office is a function within the university administration, while the Incubator and the Holding Company are two companies closely linked to the university.

The Innovation Office

The Innovation Office is the university's central function and unit for innovation related issues. The Innovation Office has been developed to help and support you in the process to turn your research into innovations. Innovations that in the end can be of great benefit to the society.

Whichever path you choose to disseminate the results of your research it is important that you consider early on the opportunities for protecting your ideas and results (e.g. by patents) and identify potential users of or customers for the results. If you believe that the results could be transformed into a commercial product you have to develop a plan for realization.

Innovation consulting

You are welcome to contact the Innovation Office if you have questions or would like help regarding utilization of your research, specifically when it comes to innovation and commercialization. The Innovation Office can inform you about rules and guidelines that you have to relate to, but it can also help you to package, validate and verify your research. The Innovation Office can help you to evaluate the legal situation for your project and investigate the possibilities to protect your idea. In addition to the innovation advisors working at the Innovation Office, the Innovation Office has a strong network of competence partners in finance, law, finance, IPR and the market. The Innovation Office’s services are free of charge for students and people employed at the university.

Financial support

Through funding from the organizations Almi and Vinnova, the Innovation Office has the opportunity to give financial support to assist you with commercial validation and verification of research based results and ideas. Support from the Innovation Office can include market, technology and team verification, as well as identification of funding needs, patent applications or other ways of protection, legal support and contact with partners or customers. The Innovation Office also monitors current funding programs and calls in the area of innovation.

The Incubator and the Holding Company

The Incubator at SU gives entrepreneurs associated with SU (researchers, teachers and students) the opportunity to develop their business ideas towards the creation of new businesses through an inspiring and tailor-made incubator program. Admission to the Incubator and the program begins with contacting the Innovation Office.

The SU Holdingbolag AB is a company managed and controlled by Stockholm University. The holding company has the opportunity to engage in commercial activities connected with the university – something that is not possible within the university itself.
