Abstract

The councils of Constance (1414–18) and Basel (1431–49) reshaped European political, religious, and intellectual history. Their documents have occupied historians for centuries, with one exception: the roughly 600 surviving sermons remain largely unpublished and greatly understudied. But how can we understand these events without them? This talk presents a newly funded project that aims to make these sources accessible and to establish their place within the conciliar proceedings. Using methods from Natural Language Processing, it will produce digital source editions and computation-based analyses of the sermons, especially in cross-council comparison, and provide reusable workflows for future research.
